Florentine Musical May 2008
Florentine Musical May, hosted by the Teatro Comunale di Firenze, is the oldest and most prestigious European Festival, along with Bayreuth and Salzburg. Founded in 1933, the Florentine Musical May offers the city two months of opera, concerts, ballet and exhibits with the participation of great artists: directors, soloists and singers.
The Festival is always distinguished by choices that have determined its constant direction: above all the great importance dedicated to "visuality" in lyric opera. From the beginning, Florentine Musical May has attempted to collaborate with the greatest theatrical and cinematographic directors and the best modern scenographers. An additional element of distinction was the constant attention to the music of the twentieth century, from its historic avant garde to the experiences of today, also with the active presence of the composers themselves. In summary, it is the rediscovery of works and authors of the past, such as Rossini and Donizzetti.
The 2008 edition of Florentine Musical May has the title "Donne Contro". Traditionally, the program alternates between major performances of symphonic music, opera and ballet, directed by prestigious international names, such as Riccardo Muti, Zubin Metha, Daniel Barenboim and others.
